“Carbon storage in the biosphere has greatest value when it is ecologically, socially and economically sustainable.”
Welcome to The Carbon Store. This Australian company was established in 1999 to promote best practice in what was then an entirely new type of business, based on creating and trading the benefits of carbon storage in the biosphere. This now makes up the majority of activity under the Commonwealth Government’s Australian Carbon Credit Unit Scheme (ACCU Scheme). The market-based approach to generating climate benefits has broad application and has recently also been applied to the conservation of biodiversity in Australia, most notably under our new Nature Repair Market.
The larger industry, in which markets for environmental services operate, is the Environmental Regeneration Industry. The Carbon Store’s Director, Mark Jackson, has been a pioneer in this industry since starting a reforestation business in 1979. Mark’s long held view is that conservation is good but insufficient, and that regeneration and repair of our natural environment must balance past and current resource use before we can hope to have sustainable lifestyles.
Therefore, The Carbon Store’s mission is to scale a best practice Environmental Regeneration Industry in Australia, through strategic interventions that remove impediments to industry growth, promote the integrity of market policies and mechanisms, and catalyse large-scale investment in activities and projects that regenerate and repair the environment. This site introduces our current projects, showcases some past activities, invites collaboration, and hopes to share our enthusiasm for an ecological understanding of relationships between people, and of people with nature.
